What is a guru?  The widest definition of the term guru is “teacher”.  In religious terms a guru is a personal spiritual teacher.

What is an Internet guru?    In Internet marketing terms the word guru means a trusted counselor and teacher and/or a recognized leader in a field.

So why should you need protection from gurus online?    Once you put aside the spiritual connotations of the word, a guru is just a person like you or me.  There are good people and there are bad people.  It follows that there are good gurus and bad ones.

There are a few different circumstances in which an Internet marketer can become known as a guru.  For instance:

1.  he or she possesses a particular talent for teaching a subject they know well;

2.  they become recognized as a leader in a particular field;

3.   they invent a new Internet marketing product;

However, the ability to communicate information, expertise in a particular subject, or the ability to build new products does not guarantee that any of these gurus will be trustworthy citizens.  An Internet marketing guru will not have ethics based on altruistic principles.  There is bound to be at least the average ratio of good people-bad people.

There is also a group of entrepreneurial characters who circulate self publicity with the object of elevating themselves to the status of guru so that people will believe they are worthy of trust.

An established Internet marketer recently published an article on his blog stating that his experience has shown that only 10% of Internet gurus are honest.  The article goes on to talk about the dangers posed by untrustworthy marketers and points out that there are scammers among the top dogs of the Internet marketing business.

Is it true that only 1 in 10 of Internet marketing gurus is trustworthy?   I won’t start guessing percentages; I’ll just say that there are people trading online who are not as honest as they might appear to be.  What I will do is give you some tips on how to protect yourself from these predators.

Tip 1.  Don’t put complete trust in anybody.

The simple fact is that Internet marketing gurus are online to make money.  The bad guys are not too choosy about what tactics they use to make money.  If an Internet marketer offers a guarantee, check that the guarantee is actually worth something.

Tip 2.  Don’t be in too much of a hurry to buy a product just because the guru who invented it previously sold you a product that brought great results.

It has been known for an unscrupulous marketer to develop a good product which earns him a good reputation.  He then releases several related products which are sub standard.  His reputation and the good reviews of the first product encourage people to buy his later products.  He makes a large amount of money before customers start to realize that the things they have bought are not worth the cash they handed over.  The guru then disappears, often to reappear under a new identity to start the process all over again.

Tip 3.  Look out for the subtle shift from giving to selling.  Internet marketers will start out by giving you tips and offering you free books, tools, etc.  When they have built up your trust, they will start recommending products for you to buy.

Tip 4.  Don’t believe the sales pitch.  If you are tempted to buy a product just because the sales page tells you it is your key to becoming fantastically rich, don’t buy it.  There has never been a product that can guarantee you wealth and there probably never will be.

Tip 5.  Keep your personal email address secret.  Don’t trust anyone enough to divulge your personal details.  Have a free email account (or several) for signing up to offers.  Your email address will be passed on or discovered by spammers despite any promises to the contrary.

Always keep in mind the fact that Internet gurus and online mentors are in the business of making money online.  None of them are saints and some of them are bound to be sinners.  Don’t be persuaded to part with your money on the basis of online reputations; they can easily be manufactured.  If you remember the above five tips, you can protect yourself from the vultures gurus.

Don’t fall for over-hyped programs.  Avoid anything that promises to make you rich in return for recruiting people into your “team”.  Find somebody who offers to teach you how to make money online.
